The holiday season for celebrations, shopping, and connecting with loved ones is here! Unfortunately, it is also a peak time for scammers to take advantage of.
Things to keep in mind:
- Be cautious of unexpected emails, texts, or calls. Do not open any unexpected attachments without first verifying its source.
- Check the sender’s information. Do you recognize this email or phone number?
- Do not click on links from unknown sources. Instead, type it directly into your browser or do a website search. (Sometimes, clickable links are redirected to an unwanted website page.)
- Do not share personal information over the phone or by replying to the message. Reach out directly to the requesting organization/individual with a trusted phone number/email found on their official website.
- Be wary of urgent requests for money or assistance, especially those involving family or friends claiming emergencies. Scammers often fabricate crises to exploit your emotions. Verify the situation by contacting the person or their close contacts directly.
Report Suspicious Activity:
- When in doubt, forward the suspicious message to SOAA IT (it@arts.ucla.edu) to confirm its authenticity.
- Report phishing emails to UCLA ITS. More information here: https://ociso.ucla.edu/phishing-scams/instructions-reporting-phishing-scam
